Research by Contemporary Care Centers

Columbia Research

Most physicians at Contemporary Care are also scientists with rich research histories. They have joined forces with neuroscientists at Columbia University to use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) guided TMS to treat patients, who fail conventional TMS therapy. Patients go to Columbia’s NYSPI t get an fMRI scan, which images brain networks that underlie our thoughts and feelings. Then they return to the Greenwich office of Contemporary Care where the fMRI images are uploaded into a neuro-navigation set up to more precisely target brain circuits involved ion depression (and other psychiatric conditions) with TMS therapy. This approach is becoming the next phase in TMS therapy with remarkable response rates in patients who failed the conventional TMS for major depression. This approach is also being used for several other conditions where TMS therapy is showing potential.

To date this approach has been used to effectively treat patents with:

  • Treatmet refractory depression
  • OCD
  • PTSD
  • Auditiry Hallucinations
  • Chronic Pain

Please call the office for more details on what fMRI guided TMS, and what other conditions it can be used to treat.

A nationwide survey by AFSP and National Alliance looks at the public perception of suicide. Findings show the top risk factors are depression 80%, feeling hopeless (74%), and being bullied (71%). Results also show that 94% of people believe that suicide is preventable. See the survey results here.
